New FREE List of Web Directories

Who says an animated logo is not fashionable nowadays? Well no one told DirGator.com as I am pretty sure no graphic designer actually created their logo (or header graphic - looks like a mismash of clip art - also is the animated part actually a dinosaur?).

This new service actually is quite impressive as provides lists of directories that you can sort almost anyway your heart desires. They have also started with a pretty strong offering out of the starting gate as listed below (from their homepage stats on 6/29/09):

* Total Directories: 1278
* Total Directories (approved): 1263
* Total Directories (pending): 0
* Total Directories (disapproved): 15
* Free directories: 1245
* Paid directories: 757
* Recip directories: 50

Here is the description of the site, from the site:

We provide lists of directories for you to browse and use. Our lists are generally useful to webmasters, search engine optimization experts and internet marketers who wish to promote their site across the internet by gaining links in free and paid directories.

Directory owners can add their directories for free by going to the "Add Directory" page.

The resource is constantly updating and we are encouraging you to visit it often and check out new directories and new features. As of now, you can browse through a list of directories, add new ones and filter the list for easier selection.

Does This Describe Your Client?

A good friend just sent me this video.

If so, run, run far and fast....:-)

It is funny, but what is not so funny is that this happens all the time and when you are in the middle of it you are wondering, what the hell? Do they not see what they are doing or do they know and just don't care.

Also, on of my favorite client videos from my days in the creative world was this one (pretty funny, but also very common).

Have fun!

Real Time Search That Works - Announcing Collecta

While real-time search is not new. Twitter has it's own search engine - Twitter Search or you could check out OneRiot or even Scoopler, but it seems that Collecta has figured out one of the better interfaces and make real-time search simple as most of the other engines appear to overwhelm you with data.

From the website:

Collecta is not like other search engines.
The web is alive with real-time information. So why search a stale archive? Collecta monitors the update streams of news sites, popular blogs and social media, and Flickr, so we can show you results as they happen. Give it a try.

The Next PageRank - PageHeat

What is PageHeat?

PageHeat is an interesting venture that tries to replace Google PageRank with a new website rating system that combines what they see as the two most important website factors - search traffic and link popularity in order to provide an overall site ranking or as they call it, a PageHeat ranking.

I am not sure where they are getting their data for the estimate traffic and/or the overall backlinks (for link popularity) and I would be curious as to what actually all goes into their forumla, but I am interested that someone is trying to compete with Google's stranglehold on the ever popular PageRank.

The Web Will be Reinvented Next Tuesday - Stay Tuned

Haven't we heard it all before? Our new (fill in the blank - application, software, script, website, browser, search engine, etc. etc.) will reinvent the (fill in the blank - web, internet, the way you see or do something, etc., etc.).

I wish someone would actually WOW me. Then I would not be so let down when all the hype surrounding whatever is new does not always disappoint me. You may say that I am a pessimist, but come on, do you really think Opera can change that much in my world?

The gang over at WebProNews have been following the story and it appears that Opera is doing a good job being mysterious. What they have discovered so far is this:

- If you look at the source code for the page you see this:

...We start our little story with the invention of the modern day computer. Over the years, the computers grew in numbers, and the next natural step in the evolution was to connect them together. To share things. But as these little networks grew, some computers gained more power than the rest and called themselves servers ...

- They then picked up on the conversation at Twitter with this post:
...But as these little networks grew, some computers gained more power than the rest and called themselves servers...to connect them together. To share things...Over the years, the computers grew in numbers, and the next natural step in the evolution was ...

Whatever it is (we have been assured it is not just the launch of Opera 10 browser) I am sure I will be checking it out next Tuesday at 9:00am along with everyone else hoping to see something cool and new. Please do not let me (us) down Opera.....:-)

Bing Goes Up and Then Goes Down (Quickly)

StatCounter, a free online visitor stats tool with over two million members and tracks in excess of ten billion pageloads per month over its network of three million websites has provided the first reports on Microsoft's new Bing traffic.

On Friday June 5th StatCounter announced that Bing was the second largest search engine in the US with a headline that read, "Bing Overtakes Yahoo!".

On Sunday June 7th TechCrunch reported with the title, "Quick Peak? Bing’s Reign As #2 Search Engine Lasted One Day" that the Bing traffic lift was only for one day (using StatCounter data) and that Bing was actually falling fast and actually losing maketshare from what it had previously (as Live and MSN Search).

The final closing from the TechCrunch article was a great wrap-up so, I am going to quote it here:

Of course, it’s important to note that StatCounter is not the be-all end-all measurement tool for such numbers. It claims to track the browsing behavior of over 2 million users across 3 million sites. But the overall trend is undeniable — Bing shot to fame quickly, and once the initial hype wore off, it’s now falling back down. Microsoft needs to keep pushing those TV and web ads to keep its name in people’s minds. Otherwise, Bing runs the risk of having already peaked.
