Seeing Redz - The Story of Click Fraud and RedZee

Labels: , ,

Redz, or previously called RedZee is one of the biggest rip-off scams on the Web. They may have changed their name and domain to try and avoid all the negative listings after any search for RedZee - EVERY listing after their own on a Google search is something negative - time for a new engine name and URL don't you think and that is exactly what they did....:-)

So, now when you search for 'redz' on the major search engines, Redz shows up between 2nd and 4th position, but there are no negative listings on the first page! Wow, good job Redz (or RedZee).

What I find funny is this, they are so sloppy on running their company that they left old versions of their search engine live. For instance, if you type in RedZee.net you get to see the original search engine. If you type in RedZee.org, you will find show old press release from 2005 called, 'New Metasearch Engine With a New Vision'. Not sure what they meant, unless the vision was a clever scheme to rip people off.

Now let me tell you a quick story about someone I know who bought into their lies and bought a listing from them. Well, after analyzing their traffic in Google Analytics it was quite interesting that a site that receives around 200 unique visits a day from search engines can suddenly spike to 600 unique visits a day with 400 of these visits coming from Redz. Let's give Redz the benefit of the doubt and assume that they could provide 400 unique visits a day (sometimes much more in bursts) I analyzed a bit deeper any amazingly enough 100%, not 98% or 99%, but 100% of the traffic bounced. So, with no explanation from Redz my friend has dropped them, but they still try to harass them into using their service with lightly veiled threats about what will happen to their website once they quit the service.

So, just for reference, Redz really does not have that much actual traffic and no they have no arrangements with any of the major search engines, but they do have a piece of software that once installed can overlay their ads on top of Google, Yahoo, Bing or Ask results giving you the appearance of clicking on a Google, Yahoo, Bing or Ask ads. This is basically spyware labeled as something else (some spyware software can catch and remove this malicious and intrusive code) as to not alarm you and/or allow you to have any idea of what it is actually doing. In addition, all the traffic my friend saw was actually 'bot' traffic, meaning it was not actual humans, but programs specifically designed to call upon and then click on ads that generate traffic for RedZee to allow it to continue selling it's program to unsuspecting individuals month after month.

What I hope to achieve with this post is a better awareness of what Redz actually is all about and to provide the potential for this information to rank within the top 10 listings in major search engines when someone actually searches on the term 'redz'.

Redz is just like RedZee you cannot hide behind a new domain and name and apparently you cannot teach an old zebra new tricks.

RedZ sucks. Do not let their high pressure sales tactics fool you into signing up with them. It is all bogus. I am so sick of them calling us every year. Nobody uses this search engine, they provide no value to the web.

They must be going through a blitz of sales calls, I got one just 30 minutes ago. The pitch made me think I needed to do some research before committing to anything and I'm glad I did. Thanks to the person that set this up. Forwarned is Forarmed.

I just got a call from them. I convinced them to give us a free 24-hour trial (they'll be listing my site, Guaranteach.com, as one of the top 3 results for the search term "tutoring"). It will be interesting to look at the Google analytics for their traffic tomorrow... I'll report back.

RedZ is a total scam. If you gave them money call your credit card company and dispute the payment.
Lesson learned - you need to check everything for possible fraud these days.

So glad that I found this post. From the initial sales pitch it did sound too good to be true, but then I found it highly suspicious that they were unable to provide search volume estimates for the keyword phrases I was interested in. Apparently, they don't track that information unless it's a keyword phrase that an advertiser is bidding on. When I asked some more probing questions the rep ended up getting slightly hostile - another red flag, given that I was asking the normal questions that I run through when checking out a potential advertising opportunity. The last two red flags, and I think you will all find this just as funny as I did:
1) "I'll have to find out if we record the total clicks in addition to unique clicks. No one has ever asked me that before."
2) "I never even heard of a browser before I started working here."

Don't waste your time!

These people don't give up. Got a cold call from them today, and it took three refusals and hang-ups for them to finally stop calling back. They tried to claim they were the next Facebook and Twitter. I asked them 3x about how people would find them to search on, and all I got were vague phrases about word of mouth.

Everything I read about them on all major webmaster and ecommerce forums says stay away, FAR away.

RedZ rep called me and gave similar sales pitch. I had never found RedZ when looking for alternative search engines so was suspicious. Any questions I asked were glossed over. I didn't like what I was hearing and so asked her for "hard copy" of her sales pitch. She said, "we don't do that". Kind of odd I thought. I wanted something in writing, no dice. She promised an email - never got that either - thank heavens! I just found this site about the Fraud and RedZ. The only thing good about them that I've seen is the red zebra - he's very cute! Thanks for the info. My intuition was correct.

I told him I had never heard of RedZ, how will others? told me the same thing, its through word of mouth. Very sketchy company. I'm glad I found this post. thanks for sharing your experiences. SCAM calls www.totaltea.us in Lubbock TX. Wanted $500 for "colon cleansing" ONLY. "Colon Cleanse" was already taken by a competitor they reported. Said i needed to hurry before the best keywords were taken. He said only the top three payers would be seen on their website, so i asked what the other 27 listings were. He said those were organic listings, so i typed in "total tea" into their site and my site was listed but with someone elses graphic??? I typed in totaltea.net and again someone elses site, but my link. Talk about a red flag. I had decided not to advertise with them BEFORE i found this blog, but this is icing on the preverbial cake. It's really a shame we work hard the every $, only to have bottom feeders try to make a quick $. I'm taking a moment now to pray for those scammers. - chad b, lubbock tx.

The sales guy is a smooth talker and sounds like he really believes in what he's selling.

He called me yesterday and this morning.

His tactic was to show a competitor who signed up. The numbers he was telling me sounded too high since their net visibility is pretty low.

The search is pretty lame looking too don't you think?? scrolling sreen shots of websites.. Some you can hardly read. Seems not very useful.

I say avoid them.

Complete and utter foolishness. See leapfish.com scam and others pulling the same old con. Stick with google and branch out with bing, yahoo and ask for your PPC needs otherwise work the "real" organic way with blogging, tagging, booking, etc. Redz is a joke and so is almost anyone else who needs to call you! Feel free to spam them or keep them on hold for hours!

Thanks for the info. Guy just called and I was suspicious from the start. Kind of a cool idea, so why make a scam out of it?
Funny part - I say to the guy, " If I'm paying for each click that comes through, couldn't you guys have bots jamming the site to run up my bill?" He says - OH NO SIR, that would be immoral!
Uhhhh... yea, it would.

I am glad by each comment I see where this post has saved someone from the scam that is Redz (formerly RedZee).

It is a complete scam, they are rude and basically all the traffic appears to be from bots (automated, not human) traffic.

I only wish we could save more people before it is too late.

Our newest web site went on line 1/4/10. In a matter of three days, a sales person from RedZ called. emailed, and said they had a better PPC deal. I had our site administrator check them out, and our conclusion is they are tons of hype, false premises and not what they claim to be. I strongly suggest anyone thinking about doing business with RedZ or Redzee to do their homework. We are sure that you will come to same conclusion.

Red Z is a total scam! They got me for over $2000.00. Very pushy salesman. When I checked my Google Analytics I mentioned to Chris with Red Z that they were my highest referrer but the average time spent on my site was 12 seconds or under. Every other referrer was over 4 minutes. So there must be someone clicking out my money on RedZ end. Chris was going to look into it and get back to me. That was over 2 weeks ago. And now the every other day sales calls have stopped. Imagine that! BEWARE of Redz!!!!

Any idea how to block this search engine from crawling your site? I've been suckered into advertising with them as well..and right this moment I show about 10 hits (all just sitting there) coming from Canada using the Redz Search. I'm sure it's their bot cause nearly all of them haven't moved from the 1st page and are sitting there for over an hour.

It appears that they haven't given up. I just got off the phone with a woman from redz. Cool display but I could tell right away it was a boiler room call. She needed to transfer me to a Specialist/Closer to get me pricing/further information. She couldn't email me any information (afraid of proof of wired fraud I guess), imagine that in this day and age a sales rep that can't email information to interested parties.

Interesting. I'm with Chad, I'm going to go pray for them. They tried so hard to tell me how they were a Christian company. I suspected bots and told them my ranking with Google suffered because of the 90% bounce rate. They had a lame excuse that they used to display in frames, but now they go directly to your site in a new window. Even proved it to me over the phone, but what about when I'm off the phone. They were going to change my keywords & e-mail me them, along with a string that I was suppose to put on the end of my URL. I think these guys would try about anything. Has anyone contacted the Better Business Bureau?

Laugh of the day: go to redz.com and enter "search engines" for the search term. For me bing.com was first (a paid listing)... redz.com didn't appear on the page! oops!

Very pushy sales person who also wanted $500... hurry before your search term is gone. yeah, right.

If nobody ever heard of them, how are they going to use them as a search engine?

On Firefox, there is a .css problem so the smallest listing line of text is written over something else. Oh, and a little simple javascript animation could have made the site much less clunky.

I think I can live happily without these guys.

As an astute business person I am always cautious, but our marketing plan is to "place many small bets" and test and learn -- and so we did with RedZ. After several months of testing and back and fourth with them - Paul Brown and Shannon Hornbach (both aliases my guess), one one single click. Many hits to the home page -- nothing to show for it. At best these people are a scam and may be a fraud. I plan to write a letter to the State Attorney General for Florida (where they are located) and Wisconsin, where we are located.

This may be a case of interstate fraud.

Funny, but I had just stopped a PPC program with someone else to the tune of $300/month - but she sounded "much" better: 10¢ per click, for $500 until it's gone. And she quoted others in my field by name ... poor guys. Who's going to search for me using something they've never heard of? "RedZ"? Really? Thanks for this site!

I just got a sales pitch call too and when I asked questions as to 'how many monthly searches do you see on this key words' I got global search numbers (which I also saw on google adwords tool) and not the actual RedZ search numbers. They could not answer my question on 'how much is the click through rate on those searches' and tried to 'weasel' away from my questions by falling into their sales pitch speech. My question about click fraud ratio and how they handle that was ignored. I told the caller I needed to discuss this with my partner and took down their phone number and name to call them back. You think I will call a search engine I had never heard before and spend $300 to $500 with them? NOPE, I wasn't born yesterday ;)

Fortunately my boss looked deeper as well. I talked with Paul last week and it sounded good, but wondered why none of my tech. geek friends had heard of RedZ. Now it is very clear why.

The strange part is that when the first girl went to transfer me she did not even tell me she was transferring me. She just disappeared so I hung up. Did not take 30 seconds before she called again and then transferred me. It was strange to say the least.

RedZ called our toll free phone number for our website reserved for sales and attempted to sell us advertising. The initial caller, a female - told me to "hang on" then abruptly transferred me to a salesman that was seemingly under the impression that I called them! He said that he could sell us advertising on his website which I have never heard of up until this point. When I told him I was NOT interested he quickly wrapped up the call before I could say another word. This type of cold calling should be, as I thought it was - A THING OF THE PAST!

Hi Folks,
Thanks for all the information. I too provided my credit card info to this company but managed to find this site and emailed them to stop the payment. However, having talked to the company (referencing this blog) about all the issues with the supposed bot traffic - I too got the explanation of iframes and that they no longer do that.

So... we are willing to give them a try. $0.10 and $0.15 per click is really good... and if we get the same conversion rate as we get on adwords.. we are not going to complain. Anyway, we will report back what we find in 10 days. Our listings go up tomorrow.

Hello Doormat Store,

Thank you for your comment, but the reality is that there traffic has been tested and re-tested by hundreds of people and it is bot traffic.

My feeling is that no money, not $0.10 or $0.15 per click is reasonable if it does not perform. Just because it is cheap does not mean it will work for you. I do expect (and hope) you come back after your test and provide feedback and follow-ups because at the end of the day I would like for RedZ to succeed as a company (as you can probably tell by my blog, I LOVE SEARCH ENGINES), just not at the expense of their customers and not with fake traffic.

Thanks again...:-)

I have just recently done my homework on RedZ, and I am now confident that I have completely wasted $600 advertising with them. All traffic they generated to my site has an either 99% or 100% bounce rate, <5 seconds of stay time, and no conversions what so ever. I did not want to believe that I had been scammed, but I am now convinced. I talked to Paul, my sales rep and he told me that Google Analytics did not report them accurately, I have since added a second tracking program to my site, and it confirms the horrible statistics coming from RedZ. I am going to try a chargeback on my credit card, but I just hope that other ppc advertisers see this site before spending any $ on RedZ's fraudulent click campaigns!

I talked to Paul, my sales rep and he told me that Google Analytics did not report them accurately, I have since added a second tracking program to my site, and it confirms the horrible statistics coming from RedZ. I am going to try a chargeback on my credit card, but I just hope that other ppc advertisers see this site before spending any $ on RedZ's fraudulent click campaigns!"

I am SO sorry to hear you lost money too! I am hoping that this post can reach more people in time before this happens to others, but sometimes people just want to believe that they can get something for next to nothing and this is definitely not one of those cases, as we have all found.

I wish you luck with your charge back and thanks for the comment on the post to help others before it happens to them.

Yep, "Leonard" called me and total scam. It's really too bad, because I really like the visualization idea. I told Leonard I wasn't interested and he got the hint. Really glad I found this article!

I joined a company who was a Redz subscriber, we quit and the bot traffic continues. Anybody know how to get rid of it? Thanks!

They still call once in awhile but we shake them usually pretty quick.

Redz tried blaming it on a tracking problem - but it took only a day to prove
I signed up ohnuts.com with redz, They said i would pay .10 per click. they gave me a "deal" 5 keywords for the deposit of $500 (regular they only give one keyword). by now i got 826 hits with not a single conversion and i have 83% bounce rate
I spoke to the sales man yesterday and we made a test he placed an order on our site and i checked on google Analytics today and guess what google isn't dumb the first conversion ever from redzz showed up
now i was with him on the phone he had nothing to say for him self he said we will keep an eye on this. i said ill keep an eye on the CC transaction
and make sure to report these scamers

Fortunately. for a change I checked deeper before committing, so thank you everyone for writing your experiences with this fraudulent company before I got suckered into $300. YOu know the old expression" If it sounds too good to be true, it probably and usually is!" Obviously, the case here.

Just received a call from a RedZ rep. Sounded good until I did my research. When I searched for our top 5 key words the info that came back was irrelevant. I asked for a two week trial period and was told they could not do that. The top three search engines all offer free testing as they have nothing to hid

Redz has used the same fake traffic provider for years. It's listed on Alexa under Redz.com. A guy name John runs it and is a friend of Ryan Krupnick's one of the founders of Redzee. The servers used generate the fake traffic send a http request to thousands of http proxy servers across the web (no live person) they mask the traffic through other domains they own. This also is how the get a high rating at Alexa. Read how to fake out Alexa. Tell me more about this IFRAME. How it works? and when did they stop?

Got a cold call today from Leondard. He then called back an hour later to follow up. Typical hard sell... rambling on and on and couldn't answer the tough questions. After telling me that I shouldn't fall for name brands (google, etc.) he then told me about how he buys name brand clothing because he works out a lot and looks good. HAHAHA!! This guy needs to be selling cars somewhere. Don't fall for it... glad I didn't (although I do look forward to his call back)!

How do I go about getting these annoying people to stop calling me? I told them "no" over a year ago after consulting with our marketing company and doing my own research and reading nothing but negative things about them. They call every month and I tell them to add me to their DNC list but they continue to do it. they're also calling a toll free number reserved for customers. Seriously tired of it.

weird sales pitch from redz. they told me to type in a phrase and when I did a bunch of non-related websites popped up...but no matter because "we could be locked in for 10 cents a click "forever" and always be one of the top three listed." the weirdest part were the long delays of silence during the phone conversation....like the line had gone dead.

Just FYI everyone. They have become more advanced with their click fraud. We signed up for a small package using one of our best converting search terms, usually about 2-3% conversion from yahoo and google when someone searches and clicks our site.

After seeing somewhere around 1000 visits and no conversions I began to wonder so I looked at my analytics and decent numbers but a little fishy compared to google/yahoo for the same keyword:

Bounce rate 40% (about 20% more)
New Visits 99% (about 30% more)
Pages / Visit 5 (usually 9)
Conversions 0

After conversing extensively about the conversions they assured me it was a tracking issue, so I added some special tracking codes and still nada. We've received thousands of visits on our niche keyword without a single transaction.

Do not fall for their pushy tactics. They will say they have thousands of customers which is simply not true. They will say the tracking does work because they are in direct competition with google and google analytics is blocking them. The more you say no the better the deal gets, so watch out!

When I left the Company 3 years ago after I figured out their scam and decided I couldnt sell it anymore even though I was makin good money. I figured they couldnt continue this for much longer. I am amazed they are still in business. They rip people off the right way 200-500 bucks. That way it is not worth it for anyone to persue legal action. There is a sucka born every minute. How many ripoffs does it take to stop this madness
